Literature
and
Life
LITERATURE IS LIFE AND
LIFE IS LITERATURE.
Because this is such a
meaningful statement,
I felt a good assignment
for my English 10 classes
would be to show how
an important event in the
life of an author influences
their writing. Since we had
already read stories by
O. Henry, W.W. Jacobs,
Shirley Jackson, Cynthia
Voight, Joan Aikens; poems
by Dorothy Parker and
Robert Frost; a play by
Susan Glaspell, we
started with these authors.
The first step was to find
at least three good
sources for background
information. Then
each student needed to
find at least one other
story, poem, or play
by the same author.
The second step was
a bit harder: identify how
something important that
had happened in the author's
life influenced their writing.
The third step was to write
the paper using citations
and a work cited page.
The students who had
all selected a particular
author then worked
in a group to develop
a web page that would
contain at least a
biography of the author,
a timeline of the author's
life, and links to each
student report.
I have listed the links
to each of the websites.
Take a few minutes
to read a few.
